Black Thorn Down Oct 15-16

Post by gscoulson on Wed Sep 15, 2010 1:50 pm

http://blackthornairsoft.squarespace.com/op-black-thorn-down/

It is a recreation of "Black Hawk Down" and will be held on the Utah National Guard training facilities on Oct 15-16. Tickets are $30 for food, tents, access to military vehicles, and raffle tickets. Looks like they're only selling them until the end of this month, so I thought I'd get the word out.

Anybody here planning on going to this? I'll be there with my brothers-in-law from Rexburg. There are uniform requirements to be either of the US forces (Rangers = tricolor or chocolate chip desert, Delta Force = MARPAT, and no ACUs), so the Rexburg crew is going Somalian in their multicam.

I was considering it, but the entry fee and cost of bio BBs makes the total around $60 to start. Just not willing to pay that right now. I will say it looks like it would be a blast.

Your grandpa works as a civilian with the National Guard.

Whoa, totally missed the bio bb rule. Glad you mentioned that. I'll have to brush up on the rest of the Camp Williams rules.

I finished figuring it up and I don't see less than $100 for this. Just not the economy for someone in construction to spend that amount on a single game.

The link that is posted has other links to the camp rules and BTA rules. Of particular note is that you can't enter a cqb area without a cqb rated weapon. The other is to have water on your person at all times and to bring some type of energy food. I would recommend that anyone thinking of a partial day forego the event. There is no guarantee you will have transport back to your vehicle.

Maybe we will have to plan a game for those of us who don't want to shell out that much cash...

If the economy was better I wouldn't hesitate. Just doesn't seem prudent for me, personally, right now.

I think with carpooling (Venezuela Thunder) we can put together some pretty good ideas for future events. This just seems a bit to pricey for a singular event. Isn't the whole point of sponsorship that you aren't forking out lots of dough.

Well, if you have the BBs already you don't have that to worry about. The ticket is $30. I figured that with ticket, BBs, food, fuel and incidentals it would run right at $100 for me. Not sure what the ticket price is for unless the Guard does end up supplying chow. The question is, who gets the money? Does it go to the Guard?

Blackthorn is sponsored by the Guard, so I doubt the proceeds from the event will be going toward their sponsor. More likely they're headed for the team coffers to help pay for team gear ammo etc. It might seem shady to us where the majority of our games, and OP's are put on for free at the cost and trouble of the coordinator.
The group I ran with in the NW used pay events in this way, almost as team fundraisers. A portion of the proceeds would be paid to the field owners (it was usually a pay to play paintball field), some of the money was used for props and stuff to enhance the event itself, and rest would go to the team.
The thing with this is up there there's too many event coordinators doing it now. More and more of the games being hosted are pay 'OPs'. It's seldom people get to play a free game with decent numbers. With the huge player base they've got up there, the free skirmishes are only attended by 10-20 people, as opposed to the 300+ numbers they get at their pay OP's.

Really what you're getting here for the $30 tag is very good. A chance to play on a military facility with a MOUT town, use of their cool hurky vehicles, provided food, and billets. If I had the money to throw around right now I'd do it. It sounds like a really great event and I'd love to go. It's like Reid said though, costs add up and the $30 becomes a bit more than that, and I just can't justify to the wife our having to eat ramen for a couple weeks so I can attend. Another time perhaps.

By the way, let me be clear that I have no probs with the hosting team using an event to fund the team.

agreed. it'd better be a B.A. event for that price, and being on base at a training facility sounds like it will be. unfortunately i won't have that kind of cash to burn either.

All right gentlemen. It is not in my nature to get involved in this type of drama, especially on someone else’s boards. However, I do not like the implications we are taking your money for our personal benefit.

Without trying to sound rude I must ask, do you have or have you dealt with sponsors? It is not a one-way relationship; you do not get everything for nothing. The Guard will be supplying staff, on base parking, billeting, food, use of the FOB & MAC/MOUT, vehicles, SWAG all of which consumes a lot more time, energy, and resources than most people care to consider. Weaponblender is handling ticket sales and supplying prizes. Our third sponsor TSDairsoft is a very recent deal and we have obligations to deliver to begin getting our benefits from them. As we grow our sponsor relationships we hope to have more to offer our members and guests at our events.

That leaves props, supplies, entertainment, our own SWAG, etc… for us to deliver. In addition, if you really must know any unused funds will go into a new event and we will learn how to adjust the fee up or down from this experience.

As stated in our description “Op: "Black Thorn Down" is BTA's first organized airsoft event”. We have researched many organized airsoft events around the world; they all supply much less and charge a lot more, sometimes in the hundreds.

Considering our lucky circumstances of having the Utah Army National Guard as our sponsor and free use of their training facility, we thought it would be a great way for more Utah airsoft teams to play together. We have used the base for five events in the past year and a half, and it has always been an open invitation. Many teams have joined us in the past JFFA, UCA, Black Dragons, TAC-4, TAC-4/Russia, BOE, YUCA, and more. This time we are reaching out to even more groups we do not usually have the pleasure of playing with. We still play every Sat. and will still have free events at Camp Williams as always with open invitations.

Not to be pushy, but after the entry fee isn’t the rest of your expenses your business? Any camo and gear needs are your personal choice. Don’t most players already bring food and water to airsoft games? As far as bios go, as a whole we have all been lucky playing without them. More and more places are beginning to require them. Given time even our BBs add up to a mess, soon we will be viewed as paintballers are, leaving our mess wherever we go.

Again, we are replying to simply address your issues and mean no offence here. If posting this is going to cause any undue drama there will be no further posts from BTA.

Regards,
Black Thorn Airsoft

no i don't think it'll cause any drama, i'll repeat that reid and i don't mind if you do use any leftover cash for your own benefit. you throw a kickin party and whatever's left after expenses is yours for your trouble. and if you don't then that's fine too. just sayin that the price plus our personal expenses won't do in this current economy, especially with reid and i both being in construction which has been hit very hard and continues to be held under water.

Trooper, no drama. Just a discussion. We here at CVA don't get involved with a lot of drama since it doesn't add anything to our sport. Like I said, if y'all put this together then any extra after expenses rightfully go to your team. If you use that to set up the next event that is just icing on the airsoft cake. I hope to be able to attend the next one since this one sounds like it will be a blast and I enjoyed running with y'all a while ago down at Silver City.

I should not have inferred the drama thing. It is just that anymore being anonymous on the internet allows people to argue without concern for what they are saying. It is nice to communicate with people in a civil manner like this.
I certainly understand your troubles with the economy; I too have been hit pretty hard. Best of luck getting thru these hard times.
Allow me to extend an open invitation out to any of our Sat. games (No fees! Wink ). Watch our web site next time we have an open game at Camp Williams please come join us.
