"Non-Traditional" Warfare Empty "Non-Traditional" Warfare

Post by Wilco Mon Oct 18, 2010 10:47 am

Has anyone else noticed how when you look through any airsoft gun club's photo album you end up looking at basically the same thing, EVERYTIME?

woodlands, full decked out tac gear and camo, M4's all around. Now, i'm not raggin on ya'll- i run the same thing (yep, got that m4, and full BDU's) but i miss the old days of "Merc Wars". Lemme 'splain.

Back in the day, my buddies and i got tired of the cookie cutter teams. We wanted to add some more color and variety to our games and the experience in general. So, we decided to play dress up: everyone made their merc "get up" out of whatever they wanted. Some people were lone wolves and built thier "look" based on a name they made, others made gangs, and dressed accoordingly. Some even made Merc groups, with a team logo, call sign and exclusive tactical methods. ( my favorite was the guy in a clown mask with a saw, call-sign "cupcake")

The fun comes when we take these mercs and design scenarios for them: assasinations, gang wars, guerilla attacks, all with random twists. We had some pretty tarantino moments.

We used paper money, (monopoly if nothing else.) which could be used to pay lone wolves to fight for you, buy perks like extra lives, and 5 second respawns. you could buy intel (lets you deploy in the field first, or allows certain rules for your team like first shot fired.) you can bid, bribe, betray- it's all about the money (and the chaos!)

point is, it's a ridiculously fun break from the seriousness of the full camo and gear, squad on squad that, while fun, can get dull.
And with halloween comnig up, it'd be even better! is this nerdy? HELL YEAH! but now we have an excuse!

Thoughts?

Sounds fun. Maybe we can combine this with the corn maze game that's being talked about.

Well, the "official" replacement game at the Guard base was cancelled, and I didn't find out about the "last minute" replacement game until I was in Salt Lake at Weaponblender after going to the zoo with my family. I wasn't planning on a game so we just headed home.

Mostly the guys at CVA aren't very interested in teams, so not a whole lot to recruit from.

yeah. i think it's cause they play with each other anyways, and there aren't enough people to begin splitting into teams.

i think if there were more regulars that played, and more often, it'd be possible- especially if playing against other teams (like black thorn teams and others) was more common. If there were tournaments, multiday events, and/ or generally a bigger organization, it'd work better.

As of right now, it seems like CVA is more of a loose group of guys looking to play whenever thier lives allow. That's my case anyways...

My CINC House or Director of Fun and Finance actually encourages me to play Airsoft.

I'm going to go ahead and close up this thread unless it turns into something productive. The conversation is turning more towards a swapping of useless banter (which normally is fine). Stay on topic please. Plus, carefully read what people right. Finance and Fiance are different things. We are a pretty relaxed group and the best way for your to implement some of your ideas is as you mentioned, a one day event. Perhaps put up some specific details of how you did it in the past as a proposal for an upcoming event. If you wanted to do an event with special perks I would suggest they stay with the team the whole day. It would get frustrating to be out on the field and not know why someone took multiple hits, or they did something else weird.

Here are some I have seen work pretty well in the past. I've seen it used at games with a large field and different objectives for each team.

Armor - An extra hit. The shots need to be separate hits so that if you are super blasted by a heavy trigger finger they still have to hit you a second time. This discourages people lighting them up.
Instant Respawn - This works for that group of guys that just want to be a team of 3 taking on the world. Other teams would obviously need a long respawn time to make it worthwhile. So body armor guys might be 3-4 minutes.
Airdrop - After a short respawn if there are multiple players from that team they can walk together with their guns in the air. They have a limited time to drop into the field of play. Meaning they can't get shot as they walk to their entry point. Once they are landing they have 3 seconds to take their positions before being in play. You have to make sure that they know this isn't a "let's go find the other team" perk, but that they get a chance to spawn other than their main base.
Last Stand - The hit individual can sit down and call for a medic while using their pistol to defend their bodies.

All of these take some time to properly balance and figure out worthwhile scenarios. Again, I wouldn't make it so that peoples perks can change.

As for paper money, I would just stay away from it. Dressing up however does make for some good events. Plan it well out in advance and just require people to get the appropriate uniforms. The arm tape works pretty well to, but I do like it when teams are actually identifiable based on their uniform or the lack there of.

Finance. my bad. It was 1:30 am.

and i didn' think we were that off topic but your right- sorry

all those are good- the whole idea is a one day event that you dress up with a theme (chechen rebels, IRA, your own group, etc) and you add your own little twist to your load out.

i like the idea of not changing your perk, or at least not often. keeping track of that and the money would be crazy. i suppose it would depend on the number of people attending. Also, you could develop your role more if your perk was more permanent...
