Hop Up Tracer Unit (HUTU)

Post by gscoulson on Tue Mar 23, 2010 5:04 pm

So, the other day I got a little package in the mail full of these guys -- high powered LEDs! I'm going to install them in my hop up so that I have a built-in tracer unit using Jawz' excellent tutorial.

I got a bunch of different colors becuase I don't want to be limited to just green tracer bbs. The green are best charged by UV light, but Madbull has shown that is not the case for all colors -- their red bbs work best in white light. Plus, I'll be able to do muzzleflash mods etc with the other colors.

Right now, I don't have any glow-in-the-dark bbs to test things out with. If anyone locally has any, I'd be happy to buy some, or trade for LEDs. Once I've practiced a few times on my own guns, I might offer my services if anyone else is interested. When I went to the Lahden Conflict game hosted last year by UtahAirsoft.com and WeaponBlender, they required all AEGs to be tracer-equipped for the night game. Plus it looks plain awesome! You can do it yourself a lot cheaper and just as effectively by a HUTU as buying the expensive tracer units.

So if anyone has any tracer bbs, let me know ASAP. I'll continue to post my progress here!

You can buy really cheap ones at Wal-Mart.

We used them to test our tracer unit. The seem to work.... OK.

I think that I have a few left that I could hook you up with...

That is super cool!! I am def interested in hearing how it goes for you.

Ps. I would take a dif pic of your package, one that doesn't show your address.

now that is a disturbing statement. Shocked

the video was cool, but i'd prefer something more reactive. not just slowly turning on when you pull the trigger.

The one Ike and I were making would flash with each bb. As the bb entered a silencer looking thing with an array or LED's, it would turn the circuit on using a very small infrared laser. When it left the chamber it would turn it off by passing through another small laser. I think that it was going to cost us < $15 bucks to make.

thats cool dude hey if you looking to power one of the higher power led ie white or blue that need more power but only want to use one double A battery check out this circuit its called a joule thief its pretty cool

also just a thought try a uv led seeing that the bbs are glow in the dark i think you can pick one up at radio shack for a few bucks

the uv bulbs work really well, the units that i have built are in the mag, I run the uv bulb on the feed tube and a high intensity white for the main chamber of the mag to get the bb's glowing

Eh hem... due to popular demand, my package is now no longer available for viewing. Razz

I've been testing out my LEDs on the TV remote buttons, and my results match Jawz that UV definitely works best, with white and blue as the runners up. I've got 50 4000mcd UV LEDs and 50 18000mcd white LEDs, so there's plenty to go around.

I'll be testing things out on my cheap Double Eagle rifles, and then I'll give it a try on my LR300 that I'm inheriting from my brother-in-law this weekend. It's got a false silencer on it, so I think I'm going to do UV in the hopup, and a series of white in the silencer.

As for the power source, I'm going to tie them to the AEG battery. The LEDs use such little power that they don't really make an impact on battery life, and the extra voltage will help them glow all the brighter. I've got resistors so the bulbs don't burn out.

I'm still deciding whether I want to have the circuit tied to the trigger, so it only glows during the feeding process, or if I want to tie it to a switch so the upcoming bbs are constantly being charged. I'm going to try it both ways, but I'm thinking the switch will work better.

I'm way excited to get working on this! Thanks for everybody's responses. Donknotts, check your inbox.

p.s. Oh, and has anyone had any experience with non-green tracers? Evike has some in Red, and there's some Biodegradable Orange ones as well, plus Madbulls' assortment.

I know that several groups have used color specific bb's and it has made for some amazing battles. I think I remember seeing a video on youtube. Anyway, each team has a specific color. So if you see green bb's flying at you they are from team A and red bb's are from team B. Most commonly it was referred to being in some sort of star wars movie.

huh well if its 700lm then it must be running like 1amp+ because the these are super high intensity leds and they are pushing 100lm and pulling 350Ma

let me know if you can mayhem i have an idea for a tracer unit. Very Happy

What is the run time of your tracer units? 700 lumens is going to require a bit of juice.

I'm not quite sure what the lumen rating for my LEDs are. I've looked at some conversion calculators to turn candelas into lumens, but it's not a straight conversion -- it depends on what angle you're looking at the LED, etc. The UV lights are 8 candela and the white are 18 candela. That being said, even with a lower candela rating, the UV lights work much better than the white on normal green tracers because of the nature of the glowing material.

There's a guy who has followed the same method I'm using and left the LEDs on for a month straight. It did not make a noticable impact on the battery's charge, nor did it burn out the lights.

The pattern I'm using is designed so that the bbs are charged while they're waiting to be loaded into the hopup by the tappet plate. It's been tested extensively by Jaws who made the tutorial, and works comparably to a commercial silencer-type tracer unit. They spend more time in the feeding tube than they do flying out the barrel, so they get a longer charge.

I've got plenty of lights, resistors, and tamiya connectors, so if anyone wants some, let me know. During the summer I'll even be available to install it all, but not until school is over study

I do have a working model that I finished on Thursday. I took it to my brother's-in-law over the weekend and showed it off there, and they say it works just as well as their commercial units they bought.

I would like to film my unit alongside a commercial unit so that we can really make a comparison. My brother's-in-law couldn't get their units working so I wasn't able to do that with them. Anybody here have a tracer unit that would be willing to help me out?
